Maverick's director revealed Tom Cruise's true personality.

Tom Cruise is a superstar. His dedication to the Top Gun franchise helped win over critics and fans. Tarantino liked Top Gun: Maverick.

Maverick is a magnificent picture, and Tom's performance in it is almost enough to ignore his troubled reputation. Some behind-the-scenes stories are cringe-worthy, despite his on-screen intensity.

Joseph Kosinski, director of Top Gun: Maverick, spoke with Vulture about Tom Cruise.

Tom Cruise resisted Top Gun: Maverick

Joseph Kosinski is a Tom Cruise expert. Two times. Joseph also directed him in Oblivion (2012).

Joseph, who based Oblivion on his own graphic novel, gave him the project. When Top Gun: Maverick came along, he tried to bring back the original star.

Everyone desired this. Tom Cruise, one of the world's biggest cinematic stars, was the first film's soul. Jerry Bruckheimer and Christopher McQuarrie (another Tom lover) wanted him to return to the franchise.

Joseph told Vulture, "When I joined, Tom Cruise didn't want to do the movie."

"This began five years ago. Jerry Bruckheimer sent me a draft for feedback. I gave my opinion. He said, "Pitch this to Tom directly."

Joseph and Jerry flew to Paris to find Tom filming Mission Impossible.

"We used 30 minutes of his time." Tom didn't want to make another Top Gun. Tom told me after I landed. "Joe, thanks for coming. Regardless, it'll be fantastic to see you. Oh, he doesn't want to do this, I thought.

Joseph told Vulture, "Because I'd worked with him before, I knew I had to capture him emotionally"

"I started with the premise that this is another rite-of-passage story. The first film is a drama despite its action-packed exterior. This would be the same thing, but with Maverick reuniting with Goose's son before a mission deep in enemy territory. As soon as I stated that, his wheels started turning."

Joseph appealed to Tom's love of technology and filmmaking.

"Then I mentioned shooting practically, and Tom's all in. Title. I said no Top Gun 2. Top Gun: Maverick is a character-driven film. He called Paramount's head and announced, "We're making a Top Gun sequel." Green light!

Joseph revealed who Tom Cruise is when describing how "vulnerable" he is in the second picture.

"Maverick is the most like Tom, in my opinion. This is his crown gem, thus he fought a sequel for 36 years, Joseph said.

"Consider that enticement. 1987 was his year. There's a meta element with him talking about flying and considering the end. Tom is a movie star who makes movies the old-fashioned way.

"Val's real-life struggles also affected Tom. He hadn't seen Val in years. Emotional day. I watched Tom's performance next to Jerry.
