The Real Reason Selena Gomez Didn't Attend the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards
If you're looking forward to Selena Gomez's comeback to the MTV Video Music Awards, you'll have to wait at least another year. She had no cause to attend this year's ceremony, as she did not receive any nominations. Gomez was last seen in Malibu on Sunday, when she had lunch at Nobu with John Janick, CEO of Interscope Records. Her appearance on the west coast is a long way from tonight's event in Newark, New Jersey, which is close to New York City.
On Friday, Gomez and Rema dropped a new collaboration together, a remix to their song "Calm Down," on which they both appear as featured artists. She has teased fans with videos of herself in the studio, suggesting that they may expect new music from her in addition to her acting roles and that it would be released this year.
In an interview with ELLE published in September, Gomez discussed her feelings toward her music career. She continued, "I don't think I'll ever cease doing music," adding that she does still feel like she's trying to prove herself there. Not that I'm actively campaigning for a Grammy, mind you. Just doing what I can and focusing on myself, that's all I can say. To be honest, that has the potential to really affect me at times. She continued, "You're emptying yourself out" in music, making the comparison between music and acting.
Gomez herself didn't receive any nominations this year, but a close friend of hers did. Taylor Swift, a close friend of Gomez's, is up for four Oscars, including Video of the Year, for the 10-minute extended version of "All Too Well." Swift not only starred in the music video but also directed it. On her 30th birthday, Gomez last gave fans a glimpse into their bond.
