From Teen Idol to Oscar Nominee

Depp! Johnny Depp has acted since the 1980s.

The actor started in 1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street before 21 Jump Street. The series made him a teen idol. Depp worked with Tim Burton on weird, indie films in the '90s.

Burton met the Corpse Bride actor at a coffee shop before making Edward Scissorhands.

Burton discussed his bond with Depp at Comic-Con 2009. "It's good to have someone you can have an abstract conversation with, leave the room feeling fine, and then have no idea what either of you said," the filmmaker remarked.

Edward Scissorhands was a turning point in Depp's career, and not just because it made him famous. He and Winona Ryder were engaged in 1990. They split after three years.

The Black Mass actor said after the breakup, "It's hard to have a personal life in this town." "It was my mistake to be so frank with Winona, but I thought honesty would kill curiosity. Instead, it fueled it and made people feel part of it.

Depp was previously married to makeup artist Lori Anne Allison from 1983 to 1985. He dated Kate Moss from 1994 to 1998 after splitting with Ryder. The Dark Shadows star later married Vanessa Paradis, with whom he had two children, Lily-Rose and Jack (born 2002). 2012 saw their breakup.

Depp told CBS This Morning a year later that he and Paradis were honest with their children about their split. I was proud of how they handled it. When you have children, you can't tell lies. Anything else is horrible, I think.”

Depp dated Amber Heard while filming 2011's The Rum Diaries. The two were civilly married in February 2015 but divorced in January 2017. Heard submitted an op-ed on surviving an abusive relationship after their split, without naming Depp. Defamation suit:

In 2022, Depp won a divorce trial against his ex-wife in Virginia. "From the outset, the purpose was to uncover the truth, regardless of the outcome," he said after the verdict. "I owed my children and my supporters the truth. I'm relieved to have done it."

1984

A Nightmare on Elm Street was the Kentucky native's film debut. Heather Langenkamp, John Saxon, and Robert Englund also starred.

1987

21 Jump Street launched Depp's career. The 1987-1991 series follows young police officers who investigated crimes at high schools and colleges. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill starred in a buddy-cop movie inspired by the show in 2012.

1990

Depp and Burton worked on Edward Scissorhands in the 1990s. The film inspired the actor to propose to Ryder in 1990. Three years later, they split up.

1999

Depp received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his roles in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Ed Wood, and Sleepy Hollow.

2000s

Depp became a Disney success with Pirates of the Caribbean in 2003. In five films, he played Captain Jack Sparrow, winning Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA nods. 2004 SAG Award for Outstanding Male Actor in a Leading Role.

2005 Depp teamed up with Burton for the offbeat adaption of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

2008

The musician received his first Golden Globe for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. In 2011, he was nominated for Alice in Wonderland and The Tourist.

Depp established Hollywood Vampires in 2012 with Alice Cooper and Joe Perry, releasing two albums in 2015 and 2019.

2016

In Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, he played Gellert Grindelwald. In 2022's Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, he was replaced by Mads Mikkelsen because to his legal difficulties.

2017

Depp and Heard split less than two years after their 2015 wedding. She filed for divorce in May 2016, claiming he was verbally and physically abusive. The divorce was finalized in January 2017 after a three-month settlement.

Aquaman actress 2020s Depp's career suffered after she wrote about claimed assault. Depp sued his ex-wife for defamation, even though she didn't name him. Heard countersued, and a trial began in April 2022 in Fairfax County, Virginia. The jury found Heard's op-ed false, defamatory, and malicious two months later.
