Johnny Depp will be Moonman at the MTV VMAs.

Johnny Depp has portrayed a variety of characters during his career, but he has never been a Moonman. However, all of that is going to change at the next MTV Video Music Awards when the actor plans to make a surprise appearance there.

VMA production sources tell TMZ that Johnny Depp has been in discussions with event producers to dress up as the network's famed Moonman — lately dubbed the Moonperson — and show face at some point during the award show's broadcast on August 28. The Moonperson was recently dubbed by TMZ.

Over the course of his career, Depp has been honored with five MTV Movie Awards, including those for Best Male Performance, Best Villain, Global Superstar, and the Generation Award in 2012.

The unexpected appearance follows the recent news that Johnny will be making a comeback to the big screen as well as the announcement that he has signed a contract with Dior. The news was first reported by TMZ; the company signed Depp to an agreement that included multiple years and seven figures so that he could continue to be the face of the Sauvage fragrance line.

It is unclear whether he will also take home some hardware from the show that will take place a week from Sunday; but, based on what we've observed with public opinion, he is certain to earn huge ovation.
