Gabriel Martinelli has stated that he tries to play like Arsenal great Thierry Henry.
Gabriel Jesus, a Brazilian international for Arsenal, has gotten a lot of attention so far this season, but another Brazilian has had a fantastic beginning to the season as well.
For the eager eyes of the Arsenal faithful, Gabriel Martinelli has progressed from a raw but brilliant potential to one of the first names on the team sheet. Most of the credit for this goes to the young forward's incredible work ethic and unbelievable talent.
There's also the possibility that Arsenal hero Thierry Henry plays a role. In a recent interview, Martinelli confessed that he attempts to model his play after the Gunners star.
The Brazilian star athlete elaborated in an interview with Sky Sports: "Henry, whom I have had the pleasure of meeting, is a genuinely pleasant human being. He was unreal in game action, cementing his status as a Premier League and club icon. Honestly, I think he is the greatest player in Premier League history."
It's true that there are noticeable parallels between their styles of play; for example, Martinelli has made it his trademark to start on the left wing and cut inside to produce a lethal finish, much as Thierry Henry does (though not quite at the Frenchman's level yet).
When asked if he studies vintage Henry footage to better his own game, Martinelli chimed in: "Sure, I'd say that's the general consensus. Everyone looks up to him since he was such a fantastic player."
The young Brazilian also named his favorite Henry goal, which is sure to win him even more fans among Arsenal faithful. Specifically referencing his knee-slide celebration, he remarked, "Yeah, the one against Tottenham for sure, that's my favorite one."
Martinelli has scored twice in three league games so far this year, putting him in the goal-scoring ranks. His first came on opening night in a win away to Crystal Palace, and his second was a magnificent performance that helped the Gunners win 3-0 at home against Leicester.
With mixed results in past tries, it was unclear going into the season if Arteta would try again with Martinelli at center forward. And yet, Jesus' entrance has done nothing but boost Martinelli's performance on the left wing. The two have linked up numerous times already, and their contributions have been crucial to Arsenal's success through the first three games of the season, which have all resulted in wins.
