FBI documents detail Brad Pitt's alleged abuse of Angelina Jolie.
Jolie's FOIA request of FBI records revealed her grave charges against Pitt.
Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt six years ago. Child custody issues, a petty quarrel over their once-shared chateau and vineyard, and abuse allegations have marred their divorce procedures. Some information about the latter warrant additional investigation.
Jolie's application came five days after the highly publicized—but never officially addressed—altercation involving her, Pitt, and their then-15-year-old son Maddox, which triggered an FBI investigation of Pitt for physical and verbal abuse and child abuse. FBI cleared Pitt months later.
Jolie is the "Jane Doe" who sued the FBI in April 2022, according to Politico. Jolie's anonymous suit claimed she requested a copy of the FBI's investigative file to "better comprehend the investigation and collect information necessary for her children to receive medical care and trauma counseling."
Rolling Stone received FBI records that detail Jolie's account of the incident. Jolie informed FBI authorities that Pitt's purported outburst on the family's private plane was caused by his drinking. At one point, he "poured beer on (Jolie) and the blanket she was under," and the plane had $25,000 worth of red wine damage when it landed in Los Angeles. She said a child (probably Maddox) called Pitt a "prick." The actor allegedly approached the youngster as if he was "about to assault," so Jolie "jumped up" and choked Pitt, who then pushed her onto a row of seats.
Jolie also said Pitt yelled at her, "grabbed her by the head," "pushed her into the restroom wall," and repeatedly hit the plane's ceiling with his fist. She said Pitt told her, "You're not taking my fucking kids," when she suggested taking their children to a hotel to rest.
Jolie sent photos of her alleged injuries and journals from their children, but the FBI opted not to charge Pitt: "All parties agreed criminal charges would not be pursued due to many considerations."
Pitt's side has implied Jolie made the FOIA request to make the FBI records public as part of a scorched-earth revenge scheme. Angelina and her colleagues are searching desperately. Showtime. Five and a half years ago, she had all this information. A "Pitt source" told Page Six there's nothing new. Pitt and Jolie haven't commented on the FBI probe.
Jolie has only obliquely alluded to her divorce from Pitt and the 2016 incident in the press. In 2021, she offered the Guardian a blockbuster interview. The magazine asked what the last five years had done to Jolie's relationships. "In some ways, the last decade," she said. I can't say much. Jolie recently supported the Violence Against Women Act, calling it "personal."
While no one is entitled to Jolie's full FBI testimony, some of the recent strife has been made public. Pitt was granted shared custody of the couple's five minor children in May 2021, despite Jolie's abuse charges. Custody fights continue. Jolie wanted Judge John W. Ouderkirk dismissed from the case because he "failed to disclose" "ongoing business and professional contacts" with Pitt's attorney. Jolie appealed and won. Pitt's team called it "a minor and unintended administrative error," and full custody remains with Jolie, while Pitt apparently "sees" the children occasionally.
The couple's château and vineyard conflict is also material. Jolie apparently sold her Miraval shares to a Russian tycoon this summer. Pitt wasn't happy with the move and said she'd damaged the wine business's reputation. Pitt's legal team said Jolie pursued and completed the sale in secret, keeping Pitt in the dark and breaking his contractual rights. Jolie's team responded: "After filing for divorce and caring for their children, Ms. Jolie and the children have not been able to return to the property, and she made the tough decision to sell her part in the business."
Jolie discussed how her ex-work husband's closeness to convicted sexual predator Harvey Weinstein caused her pain after she told Pitt about an experience with the notorious producer early in her career. Pitt requested Weinstein to produce 2012 noir movie Killing Them Softly, which the Weinstein Company released. "We argued about it," Jolie remarked, emphasizing Pitt's eagerness for working with Weinstein. "It stung,"
Pitt's connection with Weinstein is different. In 2019, Pitt revealed CNN he confronted the producer at a movie premiere in the mid-1990s, physically threatening him, after learning he invited Pitt's then-girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow to his hotel room and offering in-room massages. Paltrow told the NYT her account. Both Pitt and Jolie's stories could be true.
Pitt hasn't explicitly addressed Jolie's abuse allegations, but he's been open about staying sober in 2016 after the divorce and his pride for his daughter Zahara, who just started college. He's supposedly "pressing" to see his kids.
It's vital not to jump to judgment, yet parallels can be drawn to Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's defamation trial. The latter alleged domestic abuse, including on a private jet, and substance misuse by her ex-husband. After filing for divorce, she chronicled her injuries, demanded justice, and got more involved in domestic abuse movement. Depp claimed she was making this public—and inventing part of it—to get revenge on him and harm his name.
