Elaine Bredehoft's viral trial, moments as Amber Heard's lawyer | CTB NEWS
Elaine Bredehoft's viral trial moments as Amber Heard's lawyer.
Amber Heard is replacing her longtime attorney Elaine Bredehoft with new counsel.
Heard has recruited David L. Axelrod and Jay Ward Brown of Ballard Spahr to fight her defamation complaint against ex-husband Johnny Depp.
Bredehoft, who represented Heard in Fairfax, Virginia, said it's "time to transmit the baton.
"I've promised Amber and her appellate team my full cooperation and help," Bredehoft said.
"We look at the jury's decision—to paraphrase a famous quote—not as the beginning of the end, but as the end of the beginning," a Heard spokeswoman stated.
They said, "A separate court warrants different representation, especially as new information emerges."
Bredehoft's departure symbolizes the end of an era, albeit Ben Rottenborn will continue as co-counsel.
While Heard's attorney fought in court this year, viewers poured over every detail of the televised court hearings.
Moment Milani
Depp, 59, sued Heard, 36, for $50 million defamation for her 2018 Washington Post op-ed about domestic abuse. Bredehoft claimed in opening statements that Heard covered bruises with makeup during her relationship with Depp.
"Amber wasn't bruised when she was seen by many people that week. I'll show you "Bredehoft held a makeup palette. "Amber carried this throughout her relationship with Johnny Depp."
Milani Cosmetics uploaded a video on TikTok claiming Bredehoft wasn't using its Conceal & Perfect All In One Correcting Kit during Heard and Depp's 2012-2016 romance.
"You asked—our Correcting Kit launched in 2017!" Milani's viral video commentary garnered millions of views in hours. Social media utilized it to prove a falsehood.
"Note: Alleged abuse was 2014-2016, divorced 2016, makeup palette release date: December 2017," the video says.
The video went viral and was one of the trial's first big TikTok moments, but Bredehoft did not claim the gear was Aquaman's.
Loss-stricken?
In May, Bredehoft was again a social media talking point, but for what she didn't say.
Camille Vasquez, Depp's attorney, questioned Heard about alleged assaults by Depp. Vasquez opposed to Heard's attorney Bredehoft's questioning as hearsay and unsupported.
Bredehoft said she had no more questions, so the court told Heard to see her lawyer. Heard left the courtroom instead of sitting alongside Bredehoft.
@that1girl143 posted a clip of the event on TikTok with the caption, "She knew she lost the case at this point."
Heard lost the high-profile trial weeks later.
The jury concluded Heard defamed Depp in June and awarded him $10 million. Depp was forced to pay $2 million to Heard for defaming her through his attorney Adam Waldman.
Courtroom tears
A spectator said Bredehoft cried after the trial ended on May 27.
On the final day of the trial, lawyers for both sides argued for their clients after six weeks of testimony from the stars and other witnesses.
Twitter user @jamesfromcourt claimed he spotted Bredehoft crying hours after jury deliberations began.
Someone tweeted that the lawyer ""This trial seems to have broken #ElaineBredehoft," @jamesfromcourt tweeted. We pity her. We attempted to make her smile when she emerged. Thanks!"
In a follow-up tweet, @jamesfromcourt stated he didn't know why Bredehoft was crying but that it must be hard for her to deal with the public attention.
Depp fans defended Bredehoft, saying she was just doing her job.
@jamesfromcourt appeared on Andy Signore's YouTube show, Popcorned Planet, to discuss Bredehoft's tears in court.
"It was approximately 5 o'clock, immediately before the jury went home," he said. Few individuals remained to see if a verdict had been reached.
Continued: "Three of us were outside the bathroom when she ran in crying. After her, another woman entered the bathroom."
When Bredehoft left the restroom, "Her nose was crimson. Perhaps she blew her nose. We observed she seemed better. She's sobbed in court, so it was obvious. We all stated we feel horrible for her.
"After she came out, we all said, "Great work." Hard! Okay. Not you, etc. She smiled, thanked him, and entered the courtroom."
@jamesfromcourt speculated that Bredehoft was emotional on the final day of the trial because Depp fans condemned him online.
"Courtroom phones are still there. I think she's getting a lot of public attention, something she's not used to "saying "She's not used to protecting stars."
Attendees' reaction to Heard's legal team: "When they stroll about, no one is unpleasant or says anything. I suppose they realize they're the audience's least favorite team.
"It must be terrible to have so much attention on you...
Lawyers performing their job. Their job is to achieve that, and they would be bad if they performed differently or tried less based on their client. That's a plus."
