1 million fans want Johnny Depp's pirate career back.

Johnny Depp and the film business alike underwent a significant paradigm shift thanks to the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. Despite being largely based on an amusement park ride and starring an actor renowned for artsy flicks and aspiring to be a rock star (plus Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley), Pirates of the Caribbean became one of the largest film franchises ever. It was widely assumed that Johnny Depp, whose legal problems became public knowledge, had finished his run as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean films with 2017's Dead Men Tell No Tales. However, nearly a million people have signed a petition saying they want Johnny Depp back in the series.

Over 788,000 people have signed a petition for "Justice for Johnny Depp" on the website change.org. The petition's lengthy description boils down to this: Johnny Depp is a good actor, he was fired from the Pirates of the Caribbean series after Amber Heard made false allegations of domestic abuse against him, and now that a jury has found Heard liable in three counts of defamation, he should be reinstated. Petitioners tell Disney that "removing him was a mistake on your end but very stupid if you ask me" (this is not an opinion that Disney has specifically sought out). He has the support of every other producer, director, and writer in the industry.

Notably, Johnny Depp was let go from the Fantastic Beasts franchise (now known as Warner Bros.Discover) after the studio recast the part for Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen. This was a decision made by Warner Bros. Pictures, a branch of the corporation. The recent apparent lack of online support for Johnny Depp's social media platforms is another evidence that not everyone in the entertainment industry thinks highly of him.

Johnny Depp's career appears to be on the increase, petition or no petition. Depp's role as French King Louis XV in Mawenn's La Favorite marks his return to the leading man's chair after a hiatus of several years. He's recently branched out into the visual arts after constantly touring and performing with famed guitarist Jeff Beck. Johnny Depp's first public art display quickly sold out, earning him millions of dollars in a short amount of time. Last but not least, Disney has signaled that they would be open to Johnny Depp reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow by reintroducing him into the ride. Whether or not the petition actually has any impact remains to be seen.
